Just think of webmaster tools as running diagnostics on your car. Webmaster helps you make sure your sight is healthy and running smoothly.

Here are some popular webmaster tools that can make the job of operating a website less of a hassle:

Google webmaster tools

Google webmaster tools are designed to help you maintain your website’s health by automatically running diagnostics to check for things like mal-ware and other issues that could hamper the productivity of your site. When issues are detected, google will email you a detailed report with suggestions on how best to fix the problem.

Using Google Analytics, Google webmaster tools will also analyze all incoming data and show you exactly how users are finding your page. It will also make suggestions on the best keywords and search terms that will help searchers find your site more easily among the millions of sites that already exist out there.

You can also use Google webmaster tools to find out whether other people are linking to your pages, or which pages are productive and which ones aren’t. This way, unproductive pages can be eliminated or modified so that they aren’t just sitting on your site taking up space. It will even show you how to optimize your site for higher rankings on search engines.

Bing webmaster tools

Bing webmaster tools are similar to Google’s in that they provide the webmaster with critical data, such as SEO, relating to the performance of their website and relays that information back to the client.

To add your site to Bing, login to Bing and enter your site’s URL into the appropriate field and click add. Once this is done you’ll be whisked away to your dashboard where you’ll be informed that your dashboard is ready for use.

Your new Bing webmaster tool offers a variety of site verification methods:

XML file verification

Choosing this option will enable you to download a file called “Bingsiteauth.xml. You’ll need to place this file in your site’s root directory and return to your Bing webmaster tool dashboard and click the “Verify” button at the bottom of the page.

Meta tag verification

With this selection, a line of code is provided for you to insert into your website’s root directory, then return to your dashboard and click “Verify.”

DNS verification

Use this option if you don’t have access to your site’s root directory. The Bing webmaster tools site will provide you with detailed instructions on how to go about verifying a site which you have limited access to its design and functionality.

Your Bing webmaster tool will have installed a small icon of your website on your dashboard. By clicking on it, you will be shown in detail how your site has been performing. You will also be presented with info about sitemap, main keywords, and the top linkers to your page.

Clicking on the sitemap tab, for instance, will pull up all the items on your site that you can modify to make it perform better, as well as suggestions on which modifications would work best.

Aside from the two biggest players in the webmaster tools game, there are some smaller, bit players whose tools are no less effective in helping webmasters manage their websites. Here are some of them:

This is HTML generating tool that helps webmasters generate HTML code for pasting into their webpages to display media. This tool is ideal for webmasters who may not be versed in writing their own HTML code, or who just don’t have the time to do so.
